Activities

Wotton-under-Edge provides many opportunities and facilities for a wide range of interests. The organisations and activities mentioned below are by no means exhaustive: both the Public Library and the One Stop Shop will try to assist enquirers with information and contact names and numbers.

For sport and physical pursuits, Wotton has a small swimming pool, originally created by the hard work of the Secondary Modern school and heated by solar power. In 1999 it was fitted with a superb retractable glazed enclosure which has given it a new lease of life. It is open from April or May to September. There are well established cricket, football and rugby clubs and a very active hockey club all of which are involved in plans to provide new sporting facilities off New Road. A tennis club has recently formed, and it uses courts at KLB School. The Joint Use facility at the School Sports Hall provides squash, badminton, table tennis among other activities. Golf flourishes at the Cotswold Edge Golf Club at the top of Rushmire Hill, and there is a nine-hole golf course at Canons Court, Bradley Green. The Bowling Club plays at the Dryleaze Bowling Green. There is a Scottish dancing Club which meets weekly in Gloucester Street.

Those interested in Wotton's history and its present and future growth can join the Historical Society and the Civic Society. Both have programmes of lectures in the winter months. There is also a Family History Group which welcomes those researching their family history both in the town and elsewhere. Their collection of research records are stored in the Heritage Centre in the Chipping, where there are also temporary and permanent exhibitions of historical material.

Wotton-under-Edge and District Round Table and Ladies' Circle have done much to support local needs and displayed great energy in bringing their projects to a successful conclusion. The Cotswold Tyndale Rotary Club meets in the Old Swan Hotel. The Royal British Legion has its own headquarters in Old Town. The W.I. and the W.R.V.S. likewise do important work for the community.

The Dramatic Society contributes well produced plays at regular intervals in the Town Hall, including an annual pantomime, and has won awards for many theatrical productions over the years. The long established Wotton-under-Edge Silver Band is a great asset to the town, making an important contribution on many occasions: its concerts normally sell out fast. There are often concerts in the parish church, and local residents sing in various choirs in the area. The Annual Arts Festival takes place at the end of April or early in May. There are several art groups and numerous art exhibitions, usually at the Civic Centre.

Stroud College runs both day and evening classes on a wide range of subjects in term time at the Civic Centre. Other classes are also put on by private individuals. There is also a keen Bridge Club held there.

There are several organisations for the young, including Scouts and Guides Associations (and there is a Scout hut up at Conygre Wood where camps are run, as well as the Scout Hut in Gloucester Street), Army Cadets, Karate, and Boxing in addition to the sports clubs mentioned above, most of which have youth teams. There is an active Youth Club which meets at the Youth Centre in Rope Walk.

Wotton-under-Edge is twinned with Beaumont-le-Roger in Normandy. The Beaumont Society holds a number of fund raising and social events during the year. Visits to France alternate with visits of the French to Wotton. In 2000 the Beaumontais will be coming here at Whitsun and in 2001 the Wottonians will go to Beaumont at the late May Bank holiday. An informal link has also been established recently with the village of Wotton in Quebec, which was named after Wotton-under-Edge when it was founded 150 years ago.

A Millennium Committee co-ordinated numerous events and projects for the year 2000. The Civic Society created a Tile Trail around the town which indicates various points of interest. Booklets about this are available at the Heritage Centre, the One Stop Shop and other shops in the town.
