Electric Picture House - Frankenstein encore performance Posted: 8, 2014 01: 1 | Edit
The Electric Picture House presents:
Frankenstein (encore) starring Jonny Lee Miller as Frankenstein)
Perfomance starts at 7:45

Don't miss this special Halloween encore screening of National Theatre Live's 2011 broadcast, Frankenstein. Directed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), this sensational award-winning production stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting).

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.

Electric Picture House - A Night at the Cinema in 1914 (U) Posted: 9, 2014 12: 2 | Edit
Showing on Sunday 2nd November only at 7:30pm.

Cinema a century ago was a new, exciting and highly democratic form of entertainment. Picture houses nationwide offered a sociable, lively environment in which to relax and escape from the daily grind. With feature films still rare, the programme was an entertaining, ever-changing roster of short items with live musical accompaniment. 100 years on, this special compilation from the BFI National Archive recreates the glorious miscellany of comedies, dramas, travelogues and newsreels which would have constituted a typical night out in 1914. Our selection includes a comic short about a face-pulling competition, a sensational episode of The Perils of Pauline, scenes of Allied troops celebrating Christmas at the Front, and an early sighting of one of cinema's greatest icons.

Wotton Pantomime - Robin Hood & His Merry Man Posted: 1, 2014 02: 1 | Edit
This November pantomime returns to Wotton-under-Edge when the dramatic society stages its production of Robin Hood and His Merry Man. The panto tells the tale of Robin Hood and his faithful sidekick Merry, the challenges he faces trying foil the plans of the evil Guy of Gisborne and his bumbling henchman the Sheriff of Nottingham whilst attempting to win the hand of the fair lady Marian. Once again the panto has been co-written by Jane Parker and Anthony Young who have written a number of productions over the years, many of them award winning. Two years ago the society rounded off its eighty year celebrations by picking up two Gloucestershire Theatre Association awards for ‘Best Pantomime’ and ‘Best Comedy Performance’ and all the signs are that we will be treated to an equally high standard of entertainment this time round. You can also watch a ‘meet the cast’ video on Youtube. Just search ‘Wotton Pantomime 2104’. The society will also be raising money for the Cotswold Care Hospice during the panto run and in advance via www.justgiving.com/johnthom1967 where you go to sponsor the growing of Guy of Gisbornes beard.

2014 sees Wotton-Under-Edge dramatic society celebrating over eighty years of theatre in Wotton-Under-Edge and looking to the future as new members (many of whom are members of the junior section) come forward, the historic tradition of presenting entertaining, humorous and sometimes challenging drama in Wotton can continue for many more years. As always the society is open to new members of all ages for roles both and off stage and anyone interested can speak to any member of the society or email direct via the contact details on the society website www.wottondrama.co.uk which also now hosts a substantial archive of materials illustrating the history of the society.

Robin Hood and His Merry Man will be at Wotton-under-Edge Town Hall on Saturday 22nd November 2014 at 2:30 & 7:30 pm, Sunday 23rd November at 2:30 pm, Wed 26th, Thurs 27th and Fri 28th November at 7:30pm and Saturday 29th November at 2:30 & 7:30 pm. Tickets are £7 and are available now from the Cotswold Book Room, 26 Long Street, Wotton-under-Edge (9am to 5pm only).

Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.

Spikedrivers Posted: 9, 2014 06: 1 | Edit
Under the Edge Arts, Chipping Hall, The Chipping, Wotton under Edge, GL12 7AD present Bluesroots at its best.
Spikedrivers music has been described as \'haunting\', \'gutsy\', \'tribal\' and even psychedelic. Blues in Britain says, “From the first note, Spikedrivers demand to be listened to.” Guitarist Ben Tyzack, bassist Constance Redgrave and percussionist Maurice McElroy are a new sound of transatlantic blues.

They’ve been compared to Fleetwood Mac, Ry Cooder, JJ Cale, Led Zeppelin, The Band, Pentangle, and even Pink Floyd. Inspired by early blues legends – Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy and others – they add their own blend of north African and Native American rhythms, gospel harmonies, sixties blues and rock guitar. It all adds up to simply the Spikedrivers.

With their high energy show, Spikedrivers have been burning up European festival stages. They’ve gained rave reviews at the Chedigny Blues Festival, Cognac Blues Passions, Lugano Blues to Bop Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival, and the Jazz Rallye de Luxembourg to name just a few.

An exclusive gala screening of the highly anticipated new feature HOCKNEY, followed by an in-depth conversation with David Hockney from his Los Angeles studio, broadcast live into cinemas.

Hockney is the definitive exploration of one of the most significant artists of his generation. For the first time, David Hockney has given access to his personal archive of photographs and film, resulting in an unparalleled visual diary of a long life.
The film chronicles Hockney's vast career, from his early life in working-class Bradford, where his love for pictures was developed through his admiration for cinema, to his relocation to Hollywood where his life long struggle to escape labels ('queer', 'working class', 'figurative artist') was fully realised.
Paradoxically, this escape to live the American Dream did not break the ties to the childhood that formed him. We see his upbringing and life experiences give him the willpower to survive relationship problems, and later the AIDS epidemic, but also allow him to create some of the most renowned works of the past century.
Filmmaker Randall Wright offers a unique view of this unconventional artist who is now reaching new peaks of popularity worldwide, as charismatic as ever, and at seventy seven still working in the studio seven days a week.
