Education

Although the Education Act of 1870 made schooling compulsory throughout the country, Wotton-under-Edge had established schools long before that date. A free grammar school is known to have existed in 1291, but it is not known if this early school had an unbroken existence until 1384, when Katharine Lady Berkeley endowed a free grammar school and provided for the building of a new school house. It counts Dr. Edward Jenner, the discoverer of vaccination, among its former pupils.

The grammar school buildings in School Road were erected in 1726 with various later additions. Shortly after the school became co-educational, Church Mill was bought in 1908. After 1945, Carlton House was rented from the Post Office. Although plans had been drawn to relocate the school onto its playing field in Symn Lane, it became clear that the site was inadequate. Land was acquired off the road to Kingswood and the erection of a new building for 350 Grammar School pupils was begun in 1961 and opened in January 1963. The School Road site was sold off and the Symn Lane field transferred to the Local Education Authority.

The first phase of extension to the new KLB school buildings began in 1972, and in August 1973 the Secondary School in temporary huts off the Chipping closed and Katherine Lady Berkeley's School reopened as a comprehensive school for 830 pupils at the start of the Autumn term, 1973.

In 1984, the School celebrated its 600th anniversary and was honoured by a visit from H.R.H. The Princess Royal. In 1992 the school became Grant Maintained and in 1996 it achieved Language College designation. In 1999 it became Voluntary Aided and has the reputation of being amongst the best comprehensive schools in the country. Pupils currently have the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian Latin, French, German and Spanish as well as all the other National Curriculum subjects.

The Sports Hall which stands in the school grounds provides sporting facilities for members of the public when it is not in use by the School through a joint use agreement with Stroud District Council.

Primary education in the town also has a historic past, its old Blue Coat School having been founded as a charity school in 1693 although the old Blue Coat School building opposite the parish church dates from 1715. The British School was founded for Nonconformist children in 1843 and is now housed in new buildings beside Wortley Road. The Blue Coat School moved into the recently vacated Secondary Modern temporary huts in 1974 to combine with the National School founded in 1836 as the Blue Coat Church of England Primary School. In spring 2000, the school moved into a new building on the other side of Symn Lane. There is pre-school provision at both primary schools.
