George Carpenter celebrates 50 years as Town Crier

George Carpenter’s 50th anniversary as Wotton-under-Edge’s Town Crier has been celebrated at a reception held at the Civic Centre. To mark the milestone, George was presented with the Freedom of the Town by Mayor Councillor Roger Claydon, the first time this honour has ever been awarded in the town.

Throughout his 50 years as Town Crier, George has represented the town at numerous events, not only locally but elsewhere in the UK and around the world. In addition, George was a town councillor, held the office of Town Mayor from 1981 to 1982 and has been involved with many community organisations and projects over the years.

The celebration was attended by family and friends as well as local councillors and other Town Criers from the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, of which George was a founder member.

The Town Council would like to congratulate George and thank him for his invaluable contribution to the town over the last 50 years.
